Colorado Ave, 2018

Supporting our native bees and butterflies with species like elderberry, hydrangea arborsecens, milkweeds, goldenrods, and turtleheads!

This site is on a south facing slope and the front yard, shaded by a majestic beech and American holly was just the right setting for native wood asters and Christmas ferns, with a shrub layer of Virginia sweet spire and hydrangea arborescens. The backyard is an altogether different habitat with its water-retentive clay soil suited to species like elderberry, viburnum nudism, and Magnolia Virginia. It was a delight to repurpose materials on hand, like cobblestones once upon a time used in Baltimore City streets, for the hardscaping. Andreas Groethe and his crew, from New World Gardens, helped lay the stones.
