Wickford, 2016
Alongside the Stony Run path, it was natural to think about this space as an extension of the stream-side habitat, and we included Magnolia Virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana (hornbeam), along with Cornus florida (dogwoods) for the drier spots. In addition to the trees, the native shrub layer and perennials have created food and habitat for wildlife. Since beginning work in this space, the extant non-native cherry has succumbed, replaced by a volunteer red oak, the most ecologically beneficial of all our native trees — observe the new tree coming from the base of the old in last picture, a beautiful example that gardens are always changing.

My first job after officially establishing my LLC, Blustem Gardens, I ventured into pavers and deck building, alongside the establishment of a garden. The site was virtually a blank slate so provided a wonderful opportunity for a re-imagining.
